Hi Coach,
Liam Flynn has been one of the most respected contributors to coaches across the world based on his clinic presentations and Twitter activity.
Coach Flynn has worked professionally in Australia and Europe, but has also traveled extensively in the US studying professional teams.
With the release of his new course
“How To Teach Advantage Based Offense”, let me share with you 5 key takeaways from Coach Flynn’s
previous courses on Coachtube that I have taken for my own coaching philosophy.
1. In The Art of the Mid Pick and
Roll, Coach Flynn starts with the concept of creating advantages. His explanation really helped me to understand the concepts around SABA and other terminology coaches have used
to explain this concept. As a coach who already runs middle pick and roll, this course gave me some new teaching emphasis to use with my players. A quote that I wrote down and immediately shared with my teams was “When practice ends, shooting begins”. Players who are truly dedicated to constant improvement know that they cannot rely on just shooting drills during a normal season practice.
2. As I began to do a deeper dive into Small Sided Games (SSG), Coach Flynn’s course Small Sided Games to Teach Elite Decision Making helped me to incorporate SSGs into my teaching process to teach and reinforce the concepts of creating advantages in our transition and half court offensive attack.
4. During this Virtual Coaches Clinic presentation, Coach Flynn goes into details about a popular action from the Turkish professional team Anadolu Efes that I had been studying utilizing a variation of the Zipper action called Deep
Sweep. Coach Flynn’s explanation helped me understand why it was used and how effective it can be.
5. While we often discuss offensive decision making with our teams, we rarely get into the discussion of defensive decision making. This clinic presentation by Coach Flynn helped me put together some ways to address different offensive situations in the future. In this clip, Coach Flynn discusses when to help vs. when to stay on defense.
Talk to you soon,
Brian Williams
