For Day 3 in his series of 21 Defenses in 21 Days Coach John Wheeler features the Pack Line Defense.
The Pack Line Defense has
been one of the most popular half court defenses today.
Why is that?
Is it because
Virginia won a national championship with it?
Is it the conservative nature of building a solid wall guarding the perimeter?
Whatever it is… most coaches associate the pack line with defender one pass away. In the pack line.
But what many miss is how it works together to eliminate extreme helping situations!
Two forced to guarding one situations!
The first thing that stands out to me is how the ball is guarded on the wing.
NO BASELINE DRIVE!
The idea is this… force them middle where the defense is closest.
Yea you don’t get to use the baseline as an extra defender… but you can also avoid guards leaving the lane to help on those aggressive baseline drives.
So the real beauty of The Pack Line is that it eliminates Rotation and
Scramble situations!
Coach Wheeler is breaking this defense down today. The video is actually up.
